Exactly a year has passed since the announcement of NEO: The World Ends with You, the sequel to the classic JRPG released on the Nintendo DS, released in July for Nintendo Switch e PlayStation 4 e later on the Epic Games Store. However, despite the numerous positive reviews - such as ours published a few months ago - the title does not seem to have been particularly successful in terms of sales.
This info comes straight from one of Square Enix, regarding the first results of the fiscal year 2022/2023, the results of which are visible within a pdf file issued to shareholders. Quoting the words of Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda:
"In the context of HD Games we have released games such as" OUTRIDERS "," NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 ... "," NEO: The World Ends with You "and" Life is Strange: True Colors ", their sales were lower than those of other titles such as "Final Fantasy VII Remake" and "Marvel's Avengers" released around the same time last year. "
And although as far as Life is Strange is concerned, Square already plans to release other titles from the Dontnod and Deck Nine series on other platforms as well, such as Nintendo Switch, the same may not apply to The World Ends with You series.
"While NEO: The World Ends with You" was well received by users, it did not meet our initial sales expectations. "
In short, it is not really a pleasant "anniversary" for fans of Neku, Rindo and all the other inhabitants of the Shibuya Underground.
