Returnal, the roguelike shooter developed by Housemarque, has finally come up PlayStation 5 in digital version and on the shelves. For the occasion, the founder and CEO of the software house Ilari Kuittinen wrote an open letter to Sony, publishing it on the official game blog.
In this post, Kuittinen talks about the troubled development that the game and the development team had to go through. Not only for the obvious problems associated with the pandemic COVID-19, but also due to the failures of previous projects. In fact, in 2017, the lack of commercial success of Nex Machina led the software house to move away from the arcade genre, announcing the change of course through a letter to fans entitled Arcade is Dead.
However, this hasn't stopped Housemarque from designing and presenting the ambitious concept of Returnal, another purely arcade title, to Sony.
“In a time where publishers are taking less and less creative risks, we are sincerely grateful to our partner Sony, who gave us the opportunity to work on a truly risky project and who offered us fantastic support throughout the entire project. . "
And now? We just have to wait for the first sales results to see if the arcades can still have their say in AAA gaming landscape.
